Who Should Consider Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals seeking improvement, not perfection, in the appearance of their nose. Candidates should be in good physical health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes. This procedure is suitable for those looking to correct nasal asymmetry, remove a hump, reshape the nasal tip, or adjust the width of their nose. Additionally, individuals with breathing difficulties caused by structural irregularities in the nose may also benefit from rhinoplasty. A consultation with a medical specialist will help determine if rhinoplasty is right for you.

What to Expect When Getting Rhinoplasty

The rhinoplasty journey begins with a comprehensive consultation to discuss your aesthetic goals and evaluate your nasal structure. During the procedure, performed under anesthesia, your surgeon will make precise adjustments to the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues of your nose to achieve the desired shape and function. The surgery typically lasts one to three hours, depending on the complexity of the corrections. Post-surgery, patients are fitted with a nasal splint and may experience swelling and bruising, which gradually subsides. Follow-up care is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results.

Preparing for your procedure

Preparation for rhinoplasty involves several key steps to ensure a safe surgery and successful outcome. Patients are advised to avoid medications that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, for two weeks before and after surgery. Smoking cessation is crucial, as it can hinder healing. Prior to surgery, patients will receive detailed instructions regarding fasting, medications, and arranging for post-operative care and transportation. A thorough understanding of the procedure, recovery expectations, and a clear line of communication with your surgeon are essential components of your preparation.

    Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery

Recovery from rhinoplasty involves a period of rest followed by a gradual return to daily activities. Initial swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose will diminish over the first two weeks, with significant improvements visible after this period. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for up to six weeks to facilitate healing. It’s important to follow all post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon, including care for the surgical site and attending follow-up appointments. Full recovery and the final shape of your nose may take up to a year to fully refine.

        Pain Management, What To Expect?

Pain management post-rhinoplasty focuses on ensuring a comfortable recovery process. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be effectively managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers. Ice packs and keeping the head elevated can also help minimize swelling and discomfort. We prioritize patient comfort and will provide detailed guidance on pain management techniques and medications to support a smooth recovery.

          Additional FAQs

          What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the shape and appearance of your nose. The nose reshaping surgery can also improve breathing and alleviate issues caused by conditions, such as a deviated nasal septum. Dr. Grossman offers his patients a variety of nose procedures but does not perform nasal implants.

          You might consider rhinoplasty for:

          • Narrowing the width of your nose
          • Reshaping the size and position of your nostrils
          • Removing visible bumps on the bridge or your nose
          • Adjusting large, wide, or upturned nostrils
What is a deviated nasal septum?
The nasal septum is the structure that divides your nasal cavity in half. It’s made up of bone and cartilage and is sometimes deviated, or off center. Most people have a slight amount of septal deviation without even knowing it.

Some individuals are born with a significant misalignment of the nasal septum or experience an injury to the nose that causes the condition. A severely deviated septum can make it difficult to breathe through your nose and increases your risks of sinus infections. Nose reshaping surgery can correct the alignment and improve airflow.

          Is rhinoplasty right for me?
Dr. Grossman will discuss your reasons for rhinoplasty during your first consultation and guide you regarding the benefits of the procedure. Facial growth must be complete before you consider rhinoplasty. Otherwise, you may be a good candidate for surgery if you are generally healthy and have realistic goals regarding how rhinoplasty can improve your appearance.
          What is the procedure like?
Dr. Grossman will discuss the surgery with you in detail before scheduling your rhinoplasty. He performs the surgery in the outpatient surgery center. Depending on the type of correction, nose reshaping typically lasts 3 to 4 hours. You’ll spend time in recovery and then be released home the same day. You’ll need someone present to drive you home.
How long will it take for my nose to heal?
You’ll receive detailed instructions on caring for the surgical sites and information about required follow-up visits with Dr. Grossman before you leave the surgery center. Individuals heal at different rates, but most patients recover enough to return to work after two weeks.

If you have a physically demanding job, however, it may be longer before you can resume full work duties. Some activities, such as strenuous exercise, may be restricted for several weeks to give your nose a chance to heal completely.

          What is non-surgical rhinoplasty?
Special dermal fillers can be used to reshape the nose from a non-surgical approach. Also known as liquid rhinoplasty, this procedure has gained notoriety on social media for being quick and easy, but it is more involved than most people realize.

A rhinoplasty filler injection is delivered at multiple points. The results aren’t necessarily permanent, but can improve nasal symmetry, smooth out bumps, or reshape the tip of the nose. Some patients use this approach to get realistic results of what a traditional rhinoplasty could do for them.
