Who Should Consider Liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals close to their ideal body weight but struggling with localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Good candidates should have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone to ensure the best results. It’s crucial for patients to have realistic expectations and to be in good health, without life-threatening illnesses or conditions that can impair healing. Non-smokers are preferred, as smoking can increase the risk of complications and delay healing. A consultation with our specialists will help determine your suitability for liposuction, taking into account your medical history, aesthetic goals, and lifestyle.

What to Expect When Getting Liposuction

Getting liposuction begins with a personalized consultation where your concerns and goals are addressed, and a tailored treatment plan is developed. The procedure itself involves making small incisions in the target areas, inserting a thin tube called a cannula to loosen excess fat, and then vacuuming the fat out of the body. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it may be performed under local or general anesthesia. Our team prioritizes your comfort and safety, employing the latest techniques and technologies to minimize discomfort and downtime.

Preparing for your procedure

Preparation for liposuction involves several steps to ensure your safety and optimize outcomes. You’ll be advised to stop smoking, avoid certain medications that can increase bleeding, and maintain a stable weight. We’ll provide detailed instructions on what to eat and drink before the surgery, as well as any necessary pre-operative tests or evaluations. Preparing your home for recovery, arranging for someone to drive you home after the procedure, and taking time off work are also crucial steps in your preparation.

Liposuction Surgery Recovery

Recovery from liposuction varies with the extent of the procedure, but most patients can expect to return to work within a few days to a week. Swelling, bruising, and soreness are common but manageable with prescribed medication and compression garments. We’ll guide you through a tailored recovery plan, including activity restrictions, care for the surgical site, and follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. Recovery is a crucial time for your body to adapt to its new contours, and we’re committed to supporting you throughout this period.

    Pain Management, What To Expect?

Pain management post-liposuction is an integral part of the recovery process. While some discomfort is expected, our goal is to make your recovery as comfortable as possible. Pain is typically managed with prescribed medications, and we’ll closely monitor your pain levels to adjust your regimen as needed. Following post-operative instructions and wearing compression garments can also greatly aid in reducing discomfort and swelling, facilitating a smoother recovery.

    Additional FAQs

What do I need to Know Before Going in for a Liposuction Consultation?
Be sure to go into your liposuction consultation with a clearly defined set of expectations. This will enable your doctor to create a realistic plan. You will want to talk about how you imagine your body shape after the procedure, what your target weight should be, and how you think liposuction will improve your life. You should also create a set of questions to ask your liposuction surgeon and be prepared to get some instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. For example, you may be asked to lose a certain amount of weight before the surgery, or abstain from alcohol, or you may be asked to take a certain medication or use some skincare products. These instructions vary from patient to patient.
    How is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction is a relatively short procedure lasting between one and two hours on average and is performed while a patient is under anesthesia. Diluted local anesthesia is introduced to decrease any trauma and bleeding. Then, a cannula or thin hollowed-out tube is inserted through an incision to loosen up excess fat while the liposuction surgeon uses a controlled back-and-forth motion. As the fat becomes dislodged it is suctioned out of the body through a specialized surgical vacuum attached to the cannula.
    Is Liposuction Painful?
Liposuction is not known to be a painful procedure to go through. First, Grossman Plastic Surgery performs liposuction under anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. After liposuction you will likely feel some discomfort, but if you follow the post-procedure care instructions, you shouldn’t be in any pain. Most patients report discomfort two or three days after the procedure, and with the right medications for pain management, coupled with following the discharge instructions, you should be free from pain.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Liposuction?
Recovery time after liposuction varies per patient and per area of treatment. Liposuction typically causes bruising and swelling that can take several weeks to resolve. We typically expect a two to four week recovery period before you can return to non-strenuous activities and four-to-six-weeks for heavy lifting and exercise.

Depending upon the area being treated, Dr. Grossman may recommend use of compression garments afterward for comfort and to promote faster healing. Also expect to see Dr. Grossman for a follow-up visit within a week of the procedure so he can monitor your progress.

Will I Need to Stay in the Hospital After Liposuction?
When you book your liposuction procedure with Grossman Plastic Surgery, it is performed in our outpatient surgery center, so hospitalization is not required. This means the patient can return home on the same day as the procedure. You will want to have a family member or friend with you for the next few days to perform basic household tasks while you stay rested while performing little to no activity.
