Who Should Consider Breast Augmentation?

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are individuals looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way their breasts look. Candidates should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and be non-smokers or willing to quit. Women who feel their breasts are too small, are unhappy with the post-pregnancy volume loss, or have asymmetrical breasts may find this procedure beneficial. It’s also a viable option for reconstructive purposes following mastectomy or injury. Our team ensures that every candidate receives a thorough evaluation to discuss goals, options, and any potential risks or considerations.

What to Expect When Getting Breast Augmentation

The journey of breast augmentation begins with a personalized consultation, where your goals, preferences, and medical history are discussed. The procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia, taking about one to two hours. Techniques vary, including decisions about incision sites and implant placement, which are chosen based on your unique anatomy and desired outcome. Post-surgery, patients are monitored in our state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring comfort and safety. Our commitment to patient education means you’ll know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.

Preparing for your procedure

Preparation for breast augmentation involves several steps to ensure your safety and the success of your surgery. This includes comprehensive pre-operative evaluations, discussing your medical history, and possibly adjusting certain medications. We also provide detailed guidelines on diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking cessation. Preparing your home for a comfortable recovery is crucial, and our team offers advice on everything from arranging for assistance to setting up a recovery area in your home.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Recovery

Recovery from breast augmentation varies but generally involves a period of rest followed by a gradual return to daily activities. Initial discomfort, swelling, and bruising are managed with prescribed medication. Our dedicated follow-up care includes post-operative appointments to monitor your progress and ensure optimal healing. We provide tailored advice on recovery timelines, activity restrictions, and supportive garments to facilitate a smooth recovery process.

    Additional FAQs

    What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure during which an implant is placed behind the breast tissue to give it an enhanced appearance and shape. Dr. Grossman uses Allergan Natrelle® or Mentor® breast implants and prefers silicone over saline fillers. Each of these brands has numerous shapes, types, and sizes to choose from, which Dr. Grossman will discuss in detail during your pre-surgical consultation.
What are saline and silicone fillers?
Breast implants consist of a flexible outer shell made from silicone that is filled with liquid. The amount and type of liquid used affects the shape, size, and feel of the breast. Surgeons generally use implants filled with saline or silicone gel. Rarely, other materials such as soy oil are used as fillers.
    Why choose breast augmentation?
Many women choose breast augmentation to enlarge naturally small breasts while others are motivated by other factors, which may include:

Restoring breast fullness, size and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss
Creating symmetry when breasts have developed asymmetrically: A relatively common and sometimes very noticeable issue

Will I lose sensitivity in my breasts?
There may be a temporary change in sensation as you heal, but loss in sensitivity is not typically a permanent issue and not considered a significant risk factor for breast augmentation.
How long does the surgery last?

Dr. Grossman performs breast augmentations in the clinic’s outpatient surgery center. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep for the surgery. It generally lasts 2-4 hours and patients are released home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you home.

How long does it take to heal?
Recovery time varies per patient. There will be some soreness and slight swelling afterward. Most patients can resume all normal activities after six weeks. Dr. Grossman will provide you with detailed care instructions regarding the incision sites and specific information about what to expect as you heal. For optimal recovery, it’s important to follow his directions carefully.
    Are the implants permanent?
Like other medical prosthetics, such as an artificial knee or hip joint, breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime. Most women require a replacement implant at some point, especially if you were very young when you had your initial surgery. You may also opt to have repeat surgery to alter the size of your breasts.
