Tummy Tuck

We understand the desire for a firm and flat abdomen. Whether due to significant weight loss, childbirth, or the natural aging process, the abdomen can sometimes refuse to return to its original shape and firmness, despite diet and exercise. A Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat, tighten weakened abdominal muscles, and reshape the waistline, offering a more toned and contoured silhouette. Our expert team, led by renowned surgeons, is committed to providing personalized care and achieving natural-looking results that align with your aesthetic goals.

Who Should Consider Tummy Tuck?

Ideal candidates for a Tummy Tuck are individuals who are in good overall health, have reached a stable weight, and possess realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery. It is particularly suited for those who have excess skin or fat in the abdominal area that has not improved with diet and exercise. Women who have gone through pregnancy often find this procedure beneficial for tightening abdominal muscles and reducing skin elasticity. Similarly, individuals who have undergone significant weight loss may choose a Tummy Tuck to remove excess skin and fat. It’s important for candidates to be non-smokers, or willing to quit, as smoking can impede healing. A consultation with a medical specialist will determine your suitability for the procedure and tailor a surgical plan to meet your aesthetic goals.

What to Expect When Getting Tummy Tuck

Undergoing a Tummy Tuck begins with a detailed consultation to understand your aesthetic goals and evaluate your candidacy. The procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia and can take between two to five hours, depending on the complexity and extent of surgery required. Our surgeons make a horizontal incision above the pubic hairline, through which excess skin and fat are removed, and weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. In some cases, liposuction may be used to refine the abdominal contour. After the procedure, patients are typically required to wear a compression garment to support the healing process and minimize swelling. Our team provides comprehensive post-operative care instructions and support to ensure a smooth recovery.

Preparing for your procedure

Preparation for a Tummy Tuck involves several steps to ensure your safety and the success of your surgery. Initially, you will have a detailed consultation with your surgeon to discuss your medical history, undergo necessary evaluations, and set realistic expectations. Pre-operative instructions may include guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking cessation, and medication adjustments. Patients are advised to arrange for someone to drive them home post-surgery and assist during the first few days of recovery. Additionally, preparing your home for a comfortable recovery, such as setting up a rest area and stocking up on essential supplies, is crucial. Following all pre-operative instructions provided by our team will optimize your surgery outcomes and recovery.

Tummy Tuck Surgery Recovery

Recovery from a Tummy Tuck varies among individuals but generally involves a period of rest and limited activity to ensure proper healing. Initial recovery typically lasts 2-3 weeks, during which patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medication. It’s crucial to wear the compression garment as directed and avoid strenuous activities. Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, but full recovery and the final results may take several months to emerge. We offer personalized follow-up care to monitor your recovery and ensure the best possible outcome.

Pain Management, What To Expect?

Pain management is a critical component of the recovery process after a Tummy Tuck. We prioritize your comfort and utilize a multimodal pain management approach tailored to your individual needs. This may include prescription pain medications, over-the-counter pain relievers, and in some cases, local anesthesia techniques. Our team provides comprehensive instructions on how to manage pain at home, including the proper use of medications, positioning techniques, and the importance of following all post-operative care instructions. Our goal is to ensure a recovery that is as comfortable and smooth as possible.

Additional FAQs

What exactly is a tummy tuck?
Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area. When necessary, Dr. Grossman uses liposuction during the procedure to achieve optimal results. An abdominoplasty flattens the appearance of the belly and allows Dr. Grossman to repair weakened or damaged abdominal muscles that seem to defy any amount of ab-focused exercises.
Why isn’t my tummy getting flatter with diet and exercise?
Diet and exercise are great ways to lose weight and to improve your overall health, but pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, and even heredity can leave you with sagging abdominal muscles. This loss of muscle tone along with pockets of fat can’t be addressed with exercise and diet alone. For the best results, a tummy tuck procedure is recommended.
Is a tummy tuck permanent?
A tummy tuck is designed to be permanent, but it’s important to note that weight fluctuations due to a lack of exercise or a poor diet can erase the results. Just because you’ve undergone a tummy tuck doesn’t mean that you won’t gain weight in your midsection in the future.

This is why most plastic surgeons recommend waiting until you’re at your goal weight before undergoing a tummy tuck. Many will also recommend considering any future pregnancies before committing to the procedure.

Should I get liposuction as well?
Whether or not you require liposuction to achieve the best results all depends on your body and how much excess fat you have. Many patients choose to undergo a full tummy tuck and will have liposuction on their flanks to avoid having a longer incision.

For optimal contouring, Dr. Grossman typically recommends patients also have liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of fat on the flanks, lower back, thighs, and other areas of the body.

What is the procedure like?

Dr. Grossman will discuss the surgery in detail before you decide to commit to a tummy tuck. In general, abdominoplasty requires a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and belly button. You may need a second incision at the level of the belly button if you have excessive upper abdominal area. After the incision is made, the skin can be lifted from the area and the abdominal muscles are repaired. The excess skin is then pulled down and trimmed away and the “new” edges are sutured together. Dr. Grossman will create a new hole for your belly button and suture it in place.

What is recovery like?
A tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure. In general, the surgery takes around three to four hours to complete. Patients are sent home the same day, and it’s recommended to have someone stay with you for the next few days to ensure you’re recovering, eating, and taking medications to minimize pain and discomfort.

Most patients are fully recovered from the procedure in four to six weeks.
