Who Should Consider Breast Reduction?

Ideal candidates for breast reduction are individuals experiencing physical discomfort or emotional distress due to large, disproportionate breasts. Symptoms may include chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation beneath the breast crease, and difficulty engaging in physical activities. Candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome. During your consultation our medical professionals will assess your medical history, discuss your concerns and goals, and determine if breast reduction is the right choice for you, ensuring a safe and satisfying journey to comfort and confidence.

What to Expect When Getting Breast Reduction

Undergoing breast reduction begins with a comprehensive consultation, where your surgeon will discuss your aesthetic and functional goals, evaluate your anatomy, and explain the procedure in detail. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2 to 4 hours. Techniques vary depending on individual needs but generally involve incisions through which excess tissue is removed, and the nipple is repositioned. Post-surgery, patients are wrapped in gauze and a surgical bra to support healing. Our team provides thorough post-operative care instructions and is available to support you through your recovery journey.

Preparing for your procedure

Preparation for breast reduction involves several steps to ensure a safe and successful outcome. You’ll be advised to undergo a medical evaluation, adjust current medications, and stop smoking well in advance of the procedure. It’s also important to arrange for someone to drive you home post-surgery and assist you during the initial recovery phase. Our team will provide a detailed preparation checklist, including guidelines on eating, drinking, and medication adjustments before your surgery.

    Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery

Recovery from breast reduction varies among individuals but generally involves a period of rest and limited activity to allow the body to heal. Initial recovery typically lasts 2-3 weeks, during which patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, managed with prescribed medication. Most can return to work and light activities within this period, with full recovery and the resumption of strenuous activities taking up to 6 weeks. Our dedicated team offers continuous support and guidance throughout your recovery, ensuring a smooth and comfortable healing process.

      Pain Management, What To Expect?

Pain management post-breast reduction is a crucial aspect of the recovery process. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medications and careful adherence to post-operative care instructions. Our team prioritizes your comfort and will tailor pain management strategies to your specific needs, ensuring a recovery that is as pain-free as possible.

      Ideal Results

The results of breast reduction surgery are visible almost immediately, with final outcomes apparent once the swelling and bruising subside. Patients can expect smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts that are more proportionate to their body size, leading to relief from physical discomfort and an enhanced self-image. Scars will gradually fade over time, and with proper care, the aesthetic improvements can be long-lasting. Our goal at Grossman Plastic Surgery is to provide results that not only meet but exceed your expectations, transforming your quality of life.

      Additional FAQs

Where are Breast Reduction Surgeries Performed and How Long is the Procedure?
Breast reduction surgery is performed in our out-patient surgery center, and the procedure lasts between three to four hours. Patients return home the same day. While some cosmetic surgical procedures require a day or two of hospitalization, breast reduction surgery patients are usually able to go home a few hours after the procedure. This will save you a great deal of money, as hospital bills can be pricey, and you will be able to return to normal life more quickly as compared to other surgeries.
What Techniques are Used in Breast Reduction Surgery?
The specific technique that will be used to perform your breast reduction surgery will be determined by Dr. Grossman upon an examination during your consultation. However, there are three primary techniques embraced by all the top breast surgeons in Los Angeles.

Lollipop Incision – When one is having a vertical breast reduction procedure, the surgeon can excise tissue through a “lollipop” incision made around the areola and that extends down the bottom of the breast. Typically, this technique is used for patients who only require small amounts of tissue to be removed.

Anchor Incision – An incision is made that resembles an anchor in shape; an ideal pattern for patients who are having large amounts of tissue removed. This technique is like the lollipop incision, but stands apart because an additional incision is made under the breast at the crease. While recovery time may take longer with this approach, the technique enables a more dramatic transformation.

Liposuction – Fatty tissue is removed from the breasts through small incisions. This is usually an ideal approach for women who have very good skin elasticity and who want a minimal volume removed in their breast reduction procedure.

What does Recovery Time Look Like After Breast Reduction Surgery?
Recovery time for this procedure can range from two to four weeks with some restrictions. Most patients can return to all normal activity after six weeks. You will likely wear compression garments during the recovery process, and it is ideal to spend most of your time in bed or on the sofa. It is ideal to have a friend or family member stay with you for the first few weeks to do everyday chores, such as cleaning and preparing meals. You will also likely be prescribed some medication for pain management and will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Grossman so that your healing process can be monitored. Finally, you will want to avoid lifting anything that weighs more than 10 pounds and be prepared to have specific discharge instructions customized to your unique needs.
