Breast Augmentation

If you want to enhance your curves, you are not alone. Many people in Los Angeles are unhappy with their chest. They may want more size, shape, or fullness. You can get more size, shape, and volume with saline or silicone implants. You can also improve the symmetry of your chest. Breast Augmentation Benefits

You’re beautiful as you are, but we all have things about our body that we want to change. In women, breasts are parts of the body that many want to enhance. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world.

Patients often choose to undergo the procedure in order to:

  • Correct uneven breasts
  • Enhance breast size and volume
  • Have younger-looking breasts
  • Restore their body to pre-pregnancy shape

Most importantly, the surgical procedure allows women to feel more confident and more beautiful. Improved self-esteem can be a life-changer.

The procedure is not just a physical change to achieve a certain look or figure. It is also a personal choice for many patients who have their own goals. This can be the case for women who have lost weight and want to restore their chest’s volume and shape. After making lifestyle changes to be healthier and happier, the procedure can be the final reward for their hard work and dedication.

Many mothers want to restore their body shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding. This surgery can help them achieve this goal by reversing the changes in their chest area.

Breast Augmentation Options

Aside from the size of the implant, there are many different options to consider when undergoing breast augmentation.

Implant Type

There are three different types of breast implants that patients can choose from. These options include saline, silicone, and gummy silicone. While all breast implants are designed to provide amazing results, each is different in how they enhance breast shape, volume, and size.

  • Saline

Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. The firmness and shape of these implants are dependent on how much solution they’re filled with. With saline implants, there is a risk that the implant shell can leak or rupture. Because the saline solution is sterile, the body can safely absorb and expel it.

  • Silicone

Silicone implants are pre-filled at various sizes by the implant manufacturer. When compared to saline, silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue. In the event that a silicone implant ruptures, the gel may stay within the implant shell or it can seep into the implant pocket that your surgeon creates during the procedure. Patients with silicone implants should undergo routine MRI screenings to ensure that the implant shell is in good shape.

  • Gummy Bear Silicone

The last implant option is gummy bear silicone. These are the newest implants to hit the market and are made with a cohesive gel that has a gummy consistency, which makes them look and feel like natural breasts. Though not very common, these implants can still leak—but, because the gel is cohesive, the implant won’t lose shape, nor will the gel settle in the implant pocket.

Implant Shape

Patients can also choose between round or contoured implants. Round implants have equal fullness at the top and bottom. These implants offer a bold enhancement. However, if you’re looking for a more natural look, work with your surgeon to select the right profile and placement.

The second implant shape is contoured. Contoured implants, also known as teardrop implants, have a sloping shape that offers a more natural breast shape. The implants have more volume at the bottom and less at the top. Teardrop implants are a great option for patients who want a very natural breast augmentation result.

Incision Placement

The breast augmentation procedure can be completed using four different incision placements, including inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary, and umbilical. The incision that is best for you depends on your cosmetic goals, preference, anatomy, and the type of implant used.

  • Inframammary

Inframammary incisions are located in the crease where the breast meets the chest. This is one of the most popularly chosen incisions for patients because the scar is easily hidden and is located in an area where there’s already a natural crease.

Inframammary incisions allow for precise implant placement.

  • Periareolar

This incision is made on the outer edge of the areola. The incision is typically a semi-circle shape, with the incision being on the lower curve of the areola. A benefit of using this incision is that scars are unnoticeable because they are camouflaged in an area of the skin where there’s a natural change in color.

  • Transaxillary

The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit, which creates a pathway where the implant can be placed into the implant site. Many patients like this incision option because there is no scar on the breasts. The scar that is left is virtually invisible because of its location.

Transaxillary incisions are also ideal for women who have not yet had children, as there’s a low risk of damage to the mammary glands.

  • Umbilical

The umbilical incision can only be used on patients who have chosen saline implants. With this augmentation procedure, a small incision is made on the navel. An endoscope is then used to guide the implant to the implant site.

This is another popular incision option because it leaves the breasts scar-free.

Implant Placement

With the breast augmentation procedure, you can choose where the implant is located. Implants can be placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle. The option that’s best for you depends on the look you want, as well as the state of your breasts.

For women with minimal breast tissue, it’s ideal to place the implant under the muscle to create a natural look. When implants are placed over the pectoral muscle, they move less, as they aren’t impacted by muscle movement. However, there’s an increased risk of noticeable rippling. Over-the-muscle placement also looks less natural.

FAQs

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure during which an implant is placed behind the breast tissue to give it an enhanced appearance and shape. Dr. Grossman uses Allergan Natrelle® or Mentor® breast implants and prefers silicone over saline fillers. Each of these brands has numerous shapes, types, and sizes to choose from, which Dr. Grossman will discuss in detail during your pre-surgical consultation.

What are saline and silicone fillers?

Breast implants consist of a flexible outer shell made from silicone that is filled with liquid. The amount and type of liquid used affects the shape, size, and feel of the breast. Surgeons generally use implants filled with saline or silicone gel. Rarely, other materials such as soy oil are used as fillers.

Why choose breast augmentation?

Many women choose breast augmentation to enlarge naturally small breasts while others are motivated by other factors, which may include:

  • Restoring breast fullness, size and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss
  • Creating symmetry when breasts have developed asymmetrically: A relatively common and sometimes very noticeable issue

Will I lose sensitivity in my breasts?

There may be a temporary change in sensation as you heal, but loss in sensitivity is not typically a permanent issue and not considered a significant risk factor for breast augmentation.

How long does the surgery last?

Dr. Grossman performs breast augmentations in the clinic’s outpatient surgery center. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep for the surgery. It generally lasts 2-4 hours and patients are released home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you home.

How long does it take to heal?

Recovery time varies per patient. There will be some soreness and slight swelling afterward. Most patients can resume all normal activities after six weeks. Dr. Grossman will provide you with detailed care instructions regarding the incision sites and specific information about what to expect as you heal. For optimal recovery, it’s important to follow his directions carefully.

Are the implants permanent?

Like other medical prosthetics, such as an artificial knee or hip joint, breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime. Most women require a replacement implant at some point, especially if you were very young when you had your initial surgery. You may also opt to have repeat surgery to alter the size of your breasts.
